The Whistler Public Library, part of the Community Engagement and Cultural Services division, has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of casual Library Services Specialist starting as soon as possible. Reporting to the Public Services, Youth Services, and the Technology & Support Services Librarians, this casual position covers vacation and sick days for permanent staff during library opening hours, including evenings and weekends.
This is an entry level position delivering frontline customer service in person, on the phone, and by email. Duties will include but are not limited to maintaining patron accounts; answering basic reference questions; advising patrons on reading, listening, and viewing options; assisting patrons with their technology-related needs such as troubleshooting hardware and software issues; and promoting the library’s collection, programs, and services. The role will also work ‘back of house’ to check in materials; process inter-library loans; pull and shelve holds; shelve returned materials; and ensure that the collection is neat and organized. There may also be opportunities for this role to deliver youth programs as needed.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar customer service role in which they have worked with the public and technology. Candidates must possess proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 programs and demonstrate a growth mindset when learning new skills and tasks. Enrollment in or completion of related post-secondary education and/or previous experience working in public libraries and/or with youth will be considered strong assets. Candidates must be physically able to move library materials and lift up to 25 pounds.
The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, demonstrate a commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace, and maintain effective working relationships with others. The ideal candidate has a professional, approachable, and helpful demeanor. This individual can also de-escalate conflict when assisting the public and apply the library Code of Conduct equally to all patrons. They are detail-oriented and capable of completing a variety of tasks amidst frequent interruptions. The starting wage for this position is $27.57 an hour.
As a requirement of the position, the successful candidate must provide a satisfactory Police Information Check before starting employment.
