Main Purpose & Function
Reporting to the Child Care Supervisor, Children’s Activity Leader will plan and implement programming development appropriate for a group of 50 to 70 children ages between 5 and 12.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Child Care Supervisor, Children’s Activity Leader will plan and implement programming that is developmentally appropriate for children ages between 5 and 12; support the diverse needs of children, in an inclusive Out of School Care program in a multicultural community; and work with a team of childcare workers ensuring safety and licensing requirements as directed by the Senior Supervisor and Management.
Education and Experience
School Age Childcare certificate or Early Childhood Education or Responsible Adult certification (a minimum of 20 hours of training in “Child Growth and Development”, “Health & Safety” and/or “Guiding and Caring”).
Food Safe
Current First Aid Certificate – Emergency Child Care first aid / cpr level b
Previous experience in an Out of School Care Program or similar children’s recreation program
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Sound knowledge of the fundamentals of instruction in a child care program.
Sound knowledge of the policies, regulations and rules applicable to the work performed.
Working knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of a licensed community child care program.
Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership.
Working knowledge of crafts, arts and other pursuits related to children’s programs.
Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Ability to coordinate and lead program activities for children of various ages and development levels, and to participate in program planning and assessment.
Ability to maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and consistency.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, staff and a variety of external contacts such as social workers and therapists.
Ability to provide training and work direction to substitutes and volunteers.
Ability to assist in identifying developmental problems in children.
Ability to provide support and encouragement to families in crisis situations and to recommend appropriate referrals.
Sound knowledge of Child Development
Understanding and experience working with special needs and behaviour of children requiring extra support in an inclusive program is important.
Preference will be given to applicants with a class 4 driver’s license. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities. Local area travel and transportation arrangements
This is a Regular Part Time position. Candidates must be able to work split shifts and full-time hours on school closures. The shift schedule for this position: Monday to Friday from approximately 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with some 7:15 a.m.to 9:00 a.m. split shifts each week. On school holidays, non-instructional days and during the summer holidays, the position involves working fulltime hours/day shifts, Monday to Friday.
